August Craft Month shines a spotlight on Ireland’s thriving craft scene and provides unique opportunities for people to make, see, learn about, and buy craft. Whether you’re curious to learn, eager to create, or looking to discover something handmade and meaningful, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
benchspace Bites are introductory hands-on sessions designed to give beginners a taste of our craft disciplines. Whether a hobbyist, enthusiast or considering a career in woodturning, we will explore fundamental skills and you will create your very own piece in a single class. In this hands-on class, your tutor Rita will introduce you to the fundamentals of woodturning, covering essential tools, techniques, and safe workshop practice. Once you're familiar with the basics, you’ll move to the lathe and begin turning under Rita's expert guidance. This 2-hour session is an ideal entry point for beginners, offering a supportive and creative environment to explore the craft of woodturning and complete your very first turned piece. Materials are included in the cost of the class and all tools are provided. We are fully inclusive and all skill levels (Adult 18+) are welcome, however, please note that this course requires hand-eye coordination and the ability to follow precise instructions with regards to safety. Here's what to Wear: Avoid wearing loose clothing and jewellery and don’t forget to tie back long hair. Closed toe shoes are required on all of our workshop floors. Prepare to be covered in wood shavings! If you need glasses for close up work, don't forget to bring them. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) PPE will be provided by Benchspace for all courses that require it. It must be worn as directed. All specialist equipment and materials will be provided.
