August Craft Month shines a spotlight on Ireland’s thriving craft scene and provides unique opportunities for people to make, see, learn about, and buy craft. Whether you’re curious to learn, eager to create, or looking to discover something handmade and meaningful, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
benchspace Bites are introductory hands-on sessions designed to give beginners a taste of our craft disciplines. Whether a hobbyist, enthusiast or considering a career in woodturning, we will explore fundamental skills and you will create your very own piece in a single class. Whether you're a beginner or a novice who would like to expand their skill set and gain more experience on the lathe, this class is suitable for you.
In this class, your tutor Marea will introduce you to the basics of woodturning and explain safe practice before guiding you to the lathe to start turning. This 2-hour session has a specialised focus on turning miniatures, with bud vases as the featured project—perfect for building precision and fine-detail skills. Materials are included in the cost of the class and all tools are provided. We are fully inclusive and all skill levels (Adult 18+) are welcome, however, please note that this course requires hand-eye coordination and the ability to follow precise instructions with regards to safety. Here's what to Wear: Avoid wearing loose clothing and jewellery and don’t forget to tie back long hair. Closed toe shoes are required on all of our workshop floors. Prepare to be covered in wood shavings! If you need glasses for close up work, don't forget to bring them. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) PPE will be provided by Benchspace for all courses that require it. It must be worn as directed. All specialist equipment and materials will be provided.
