In this Design Week workshop, Aleksandra Kowalczyk will demonstrate a variety of ways in which she uses the laser cutting machine in her design process.
She will explain how she makes card wall panels as well as how she makes intricate models and prototypes for ceramic/glass/bronze casting. She will explain in detail how each pattern is developed by breaking them into smaller units.
She will demonstrate how patterns emerge and by showing this, can instruct how one can create their own infinitive pattern.
She hopes this workshop will show you how playful and creative geometry can be.
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Aleks is a Polish born artist, based in Cork and a recent graduate from Contemporary Applied Art in Crawford College of Art and Design. In her practice, she works mainly with sculptural pieces, using various materials such as glass, ceramics, bronze and card. Her recent body of work explores ideas of order, chaos and rhythm by using geometrical, repetitive patterns. To create these patterns, she has made use of a laser cutting machine as it speeds up the process while delivering excellent precision. It is a very important aspect of her work as she is interested in how the linking of new technologies with traditional craft techniques can influence contemporary making.
