Skill Builder Woodwork Course – Frame Building for Artists – Mar 2026

Skill Builders are in-depth, hands-on courses and sessions designed for those ready to dive deeper into a specific craft discipline.  Whether you’re developing your skills for personal practice or working toward becoming a Benchspace Maker, these courses and sessions focus on building confidence, technique, and creative independence through guided, project-based learning.

Learn to Build Frames for your Artwork
This 6-week course is designed for artists who want to take control of how their work is presented.
Focused on frame building, you’ll develop practical skills using hand tools and basic power tools, learning accurate measuring, cutting, joining, and assembly techniques.  You’ll be guided through constructing stretchers and decorative frames, and by the end of the course, you’ll have the skills to create custom frames and stretchers for your own practice – saving money and presenting your artwork exactly as you intend.

Who can Join:  This is a Beginner-Level Course, delivering a strong foundation in frame building skills using hand and power tools through hands-on experience, and suitable for Adults 18+ of all skill levels.  Good hand-eye coordination and the ability to follow safety instructions are essential.

• • Source suitable wood for building a frame
  • Safe use of woodworking tools
  • Construct guides for accurately cutting frame components

  • Joints and their uses: Tongue + Groove, Brindle, Half-Lap and Mortise + Tenon

Here’s what to Wear:  Avoid wearing loose clothing and jewellery and don’t forget to tie back long hair.  Closed toe shoes are required on all of our workshop floors.  If you need glasses for close up work, don’t forget to bring them.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):  PPE will be provided for all courses that require it.  It must be worn as directed.  All specialist equipment and materials will be provided.
