Skill Builder Digital Course – 3D Printing for Creative Practice – Nov 2026

Skill Builders are in-depth, hands-on courses and sessions designed for those ready to dive deeper into a specific craft discipline.  Whether you’re developing your skills for personal practice or working toward becoming a Benchspace Maker, these courses and sessions focus on building confidence, technique, and creative independence through guided, project-based learning.

3D Printing for Creative Practice
This evening course introduces you to 3D printing, both as a standalone artistic form and as a creative tool for expanding and enhancing your existing making and artistic practice.  You’ll explore how digital fabrication can be combined with traditional techniques, materials and processes to develop new ideas, forms and possibilities.

Across this 4 week course, you’ll learn the fundamentals of 3D printing, explore digital design tools and develop your own project from concept through to a finished, assembled piece.
No previous experience with 3D printing or digital design is required.

Week 1: Introduction to 3D Printing

Explore the fundamentals of 3D printing, including materials, applications and the possibilities of parametric design – you’ll discover how 3D printing can complement and extend other forms of making.
Week 2: Introduction to 3D Design Tools
Learn basic principles and tools of 3D digital design – you’ll develop the skills needed to create, modify and prepare your own designs for 3D printing.
Week 3: Design Your Project
Apply your new skills to develop an individual project – you’ll explore ideas, experiment with form and function, and refine your design in preparation for fabrication.
Week 4: Project Assembly & Finishing
Bring your project to life through printing, assembly and finishing – you’ll explore techniques for refining printed components and combining them with other materials and making processes to create a completed piece.
