The People’s Parklet will open July 24th at 4pm.
The People’s Parklet on Douglas Street (outside Cork Flower Studios) is the first long term, purpose built Parklet in Ireland. It is an on-street public space for people to relax and linger, combining elements of seating, planting and bicycle parking, it offers an alternative experience of the city.
This parklet is moveable and can be relocated to different areas in the city centre. It is hoped that it will enhance whatever public space it is placed in, fostering a sense of place and bringing a pop of natural materials, green planting and vibrant artwork to what might otherwise be a concrete, overlooked or neglected space.
The best and brightest of Corks groups including benchspace, The Transport and Mobility Forum, Mad about Cork, The Douglas Street Business Association, Cork Flower Studios and the build team led by Rory Drinan collaborated to bring this Parklet design by Siobhan Keogh to life.
The Parklet is constructed by cladding a steel and timber frame in Siberian Larch which like the vibrant pollinator friendly planting will age beautifully over its lifetime, it will remain in place until September 29th (including Parking Day on Sept 20th).
