Skill Builder – Make a Keum-Boo Pendant or Pin – Friday Evening – CRAFT MONTH
August Craft Month shines a spotlight on Ireland’s thriving craft scene and provides unique opportunities for people to make, see, learn about, and buy craft. Whether you’re curious to learn, eager to create, or looking to discover something handmade and meaningful, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Skill Builders are in-depth, hands-on courses and sessions designed for those ready to dive deeper into a specific craft discipline. Whether you’re developing your skills for personal practice or working toward becoming a Benchspace Maker, these courses and sessions focus on building confidence, technique, and creative independence through guided, project-based learning.
Turn Silver to Gold
Keum-Boo is an ancient Korean gilding technique where thin gold foil is permanently bonded to silver. The surface is heated to raise a fine silver layer, then gold is fused to the silver surface using heat and pressure to form a permanent bond. A relatively simple process which doesn’t require expensive equipment, this is an accessible skill that allows makers to add contrast and depth to their work.
Perfect for complete beginners or jewellers wanting to broaden their skills, this 3½ hour Skill Stacker with tutor Fabio will guide you through designing and making a beautiful gold and sterling silver pendant or pin using the Keum-Boo technique.
You’ll get to choose whether you’d like to create a pendant to wear or a pin to add a unique touch to your jacket, bag, or hat – giving you the freedom to make something that suits your personal style.
You’ll learn how to develop your design ideas, apply delicate 24ct gold leaf to silver, and shape, texture, and finish your piece with expert guidance throughout. Gain practical, hands-on experience in jewellery fabrication while experimenting with unique surface finishes and textures to make your piece completely your own.
